five-fingered discount

You stole WHAT?! Spill it!

When I was younger, I never so much as pocketed a lip gloss or stole a candy from a bulk bin at the grocery store. But now is my chance to admit it ... since I became a mother, I've become a common thief.

It's not my fault though, I swear! It's the baby's fault! It's the stroller's fault! When I'm carting around the babe, the diaper bag, sometimes a purse and other odds and ends in the various compartments of the stroller, things get a little chaotic.

Until recently, Jacob was nestled in the top of the stroller, in his car seat. I usually pile things in the basket underneath, but occasionally, if things get too full, I'll set a couple things on Jacob's lap. Little did I know, items can easily slip in between the car seat and into the stroller, completely hidden from view.

Makes me wonder how many people rip stores off intentionally when they're using a stroller. I, for one, really did feel bad, but I honestly wasn't going to return to the store, baby in tow, to 'fess up. Our "hot" items? A $6 package of baby socks and a $5 Mom organizer. Do you really think that mega store noticed that $11?

So there. The truth is out there. Don't judge.

  1. Doesn't that just make you feel a little better? I always worry that I'll do something like that and then I will walk thru the door and an alarm will go off and then they will think I actually meant to steal it.

  2. I'm sure it happens. You get credit for getting out of the store without losing your cool with a baby.

Okay after reading these prompts, I now remember an unforgettable meal and that I did once walk out of Target without paying for my pictures I developed on one of their machines. They just plopped out and I picked them up and left. (I did go back and pay for them.)

  3. No big deal! I think it's very clear when moms forget things in the stroller and when they are INTENTIONALLY hiding things in the stroller.

I was at Wal-Mart recently and one of the clerks was helping me with the self-serve machine (it screwed up my order). And while she was helping me, a mom was trying to slip by with stuff hidden under her kids' coats in the bottom of the cart. The clerk spotted it and called her on it, and the woman clearly was pretending to have forgotten it, and went back and paid for it. The clerk was muttering under her breath and apologizing to me for seeing that. It was so awkward!

  4. I was JUST talking to a friend about this as I realized two days later that we'd walked out of Nordstrom with a little $3 baby maraca I'd given my son to occupy him while shopping. I thought I'd put it back but didn't realize until the following day when I unfolded the stroller for the third time that it was still in there!

And when he was little (maybe 2 months old?) I put some things to buy into the basket in his snap and go stroller at a Marshall's and then he freaked out so I just put back the things I was holding and walked out of the store to the car and put him in there and then went to fold up the stroller only to realize that we'd walked out with two baby toys! And we were all the way across the parking lot and I had no way to just run in and drop it off, so I went the next day when he was in a better mood and we paid for the stuff then. The lady behind the counter actually commended me for coming back in and said that she completely understood (bringing my little guy back with me helped I think!)
