and then there were three

Can’t believe you’re here now
Tiny dream come true
The answer to a prayer now
I’m so in love with you
Couldn’t wait to meet you
Hope you like your name
I get the funny feeling
Life will never be the same

Safe and sound
You’re here with me now
Like I hoped you’d be
Safe and sound
You’re here with me now
And that’s all I’ll ever need

The world’s a scary place here
But baby it’s alright
I’ll make sure the coast is clear
So you can just sleep tight
But if you’re afraid of monsters
Like everybody is
I’ll be right beside you
Closer than a kiss

Safe and sound
I’m here with you now
And you will always be
Safe and sound
I’m here with you now
And that’s all you’ll ever need

Someday I’m gonna teach you
The reason why we pray
So that heaven’s love may reach you
Every single day
So, baby close your eyes now
And say a prayer with me
Lord, I lay me down to sleep now
But I know I will be

Safe and sound
You’re here with us now
And we will always be
Safe and sound You’re here with us now
And that’s all we’ll ever, all we’ll ever need
You’re all we’ll ever need

not me monday

I am not starting to get annoyed at the fact that I am nearly a week overdue.

I am not considering jumping on trampolines, horseback riding or commandeering a bumper car to help coax Baby B out of hiding.

I would never lecture my unborn son about the importance of being on time for his engagements.

And I am most definitely taking suggestions of things I can do to pass the time to keep myself from going crazy.

finally finished

Here's the last piece of the nursery puzzle.

We started with a hand-me-down, dusty rose, swivel armchair. But once we found out that our bambino is a boy, I knew I wanted to cover it to something more boy-ish.

Oddly enough, after searching high and low in stores and online, I couldn't find a slipcover to fit. So I got the closest thing I could find –

It needed to be nipped and tucked from all angles — sides, seat, arms and length. The bottom portion went smoothly, but removing the wings from the wing back was a lot easier said than done.

Halfway through, I actually considered leaving the chair pink, but my Mum convinced me that having a cover to protect the upholstery from baby barf would be a blessing. True. So, here's the finished product.

And now his room is complete. Did you hear that Baby B? Your room is ready for you! You can come out any time ... seriously. Any time!

d-day

If you're keeping track, today is my due date!

Eeeekkkkk! I know that less than 5% of babies are born on their due dates, but I was, so maybe it runs in the family and our little boy will arrive today? Wishful thinking? Maybe.

I've been doing as many things as I can to naturally nudge this little guy to get this party started — walking, rocking and bouncing on my balance ball, drinking red raspberry leaf tea, taking herbs given to me by my lovely naturopathic doctor sister-in-law, eating spicy food and fresh pineapple. The list goes on.

I'm not really this impatient. I know he will arrive when he's good and ready, and not a moment early. It's just that I'm ready. Totally, completely, absolutely ready. That means, I have nothing left to do. The nursery is ready, the deep freezer is stocked with homemade meals, the house is clean from top to bottom. I've read books, watched movies, got my haircut, gone out for coffee.

Husband has started to take our car the whole way to school (one hour commute each way) instead of traveling with a carpool buddy, so he's fully on call when the moment arrives.

The waiting game is now in full swing. Wish us luck!

nursery reveal

It's been months in the making, but Baby B's room is finally just about ready for his arrival! Good thing too, since he's due in a week!

I wanted to make this a special space for our new addition, while also being frugal, which meant scouting for deals and repurposing a few things we had around the house. When we decided on a coffee-coloured crib, we snagged this shelf from our living room for the nursery instead.

I picked up this super-cute, hand-carved mommy & baby elephant figurine at the Boyce Market in Fredericton.

Husband and I loved the baby safari theme in the Babies R Us catalogue right away and couldn't find anything we liked more. That said, to be truthful, the wall decals and valence we got were quite over-priced, and the customer service at the local store is absolutely terrible. In the end though, we got what we wanted and are very happy with the way it turned out.

The baby sign above the window is one of the first gifts our baby received, from his grammie-to-be. The swing, which will likely end up in the living room after our babe arrives, was a generous gift from my co-workers.

Here are the decals up close. They stuck on easily and we were able to move them around until we were satisfied with the pattern. They blended perfectly with the wall colour, which meant we didn't even consider painting the nursery — one task I was happy to forego. I used some little 3x3 canvases I had stashed away to paint a nameplate for our boy, and Husband carefully hung them at just the right angle above the crib.

You'll remember these under-crib storage bins from an earlier post.

Captured in two photos below is the shelf we picked up at Walmart, thanks to generous gifts of money and gift cards. We were originally planning to get a changing table, but it seemed silly to spend money on a piece of furniture that could really only serve one (stinky) purpose. So we picked this shelf for it's storage and display potential, as well as future usability in any room of the house.

The lantern hanging above the shelf is a keepsake decoration I kept from our wedding. The first shelf holds the lovely DIY frame we received from a friend and the Noah's Ark themed piggy bank Baby B received from his great-grammie-B. We're using the next three shelves for storing diapers, receiving blankets and other items in baskets. And the bottom shelf currently houses his Bumbo chair until he's big enough to use it.

Finally, we have the dresser that once belonged to my Mum and then belonged to me. I had originally considered re-finishing it, but decided that the shade of the wood lends itself nicely with the espresso colour of the rest of the pieces. My main concern was the surface of the top of the dresser, because the stain and varnish was quite faded, but that issue was solved by attaching the changing pad we received from lovely friend HH and converting it into Baby B's changing station.

We snagged the white clock, which was a wedding gift, from one of our bathrooms and decided it would serve better use here when we stagger in for middle-of-the-night diaper changes and have no idea what ungodly hour it is.

One thing you can't see here is the swivel chair. It's currently still in its dusty rose/beige state, and I'm hoping to have time to alter the chocolate brown slipcover I bought for it before Baby B debuts. Stay tuned for that, too.

Now all this room's missing is its tiny resident, who is hopefully coming soon!

how many parents-to-be does it take ...

... to put together a Graco Pack 'n' Play?

The answer is two very patient and calm individuals who never snap at each other.
And at least one full hour.
And disassembling and reassembling at least three times.
Oh, and one completely useless "instruction" booklet.

But when it's finished and there's a new place for your babe to sleep beside you at night, it's totally worth it.

drum roll ...

Years ago, before we were even married, Husband and I chatted about our hypothetical future and family-to-be. During these daydreams, one thing we agreed on was a boys' name for a future son.

When we found out that our first babe would be a boy, that name landed high on our short list, but we soon found out that it was also hovering at the top of the list for all of Canada for the past decade or so. We weren't sure about the popularity factor and went back to the drawing board.

We hmm'd and haw'd over it for weeks and months. We poured through a half dozen baby name books and many, many websites for ideas and inspiration. We even asked Baby B's opinion, asking him to kick once for one name, or twice for another name ... oddly though, he seemed indifferent.

When it came down to it, we couldn't fight our first instincts. Nothing felt as right.

Without further adieu ...

How cute is this personalized onesie from lovely friend T? So, barring any weird changes of heart, our boy will be Jacob. Jake and sometimes Jakey for short. Lovely sister-in-law C may also occasionally call him J-Bird.

Jacob Michael, to be exact — his second name in honour of Husband. We still call him "the baby" a lot, but we're slowly incorporating his real name into conversations more and more.

We've also received a couple other personalized pressies for Baby B ...

I can't wait to meet him and say his name to him for the first time!

37 weeks

It's been a month since my last pregnancy update. We're starting to really feel like we're in the home stretch. Baby B could actually arrive any day now and we are feeling very ready and excited to meet him.
How far along? 37 weeks.

How big is baby? At my doctor's appointment last week, the doctor told me that Baby B is cooking up perfectly. She said if he were born now, he'd likely be about 6 lbs. Based on the way he can simultaneously head-butt my bladder and kick me in the ribs, I'd say he's approximately two feet long.

Total weight gain:
I'm inching up slowly but surely, having gained 26 lbs so far. I'm pretty happy with this number, since 25-35 lbs. weight gain is average for my body type.

Maternity Clothes?
I'm starting to pack them up! Anything that's too warm to wear on these hot summer days has made its way into the box labeled "Things for the next pregnancy," along with the baby name books and some reference materials. I'm pretty pumped for my old clothes!

Stretch marks?
Agh. These little pests are starting to pop up. Not big, long lines, but little dot-type marks around the lower sides of my protruding belly. Here's hoping they stay under control for these last few weeks!

Sleep: I'm restless at night. It's not horrible, but it's not awesome either. I'm peeing about 4-5 times each night lately, which is disruptive, to say the least. I have snuck in a few daytime naps here and there lately, since everyone says I should be taking advantage of this time and getting as much sleep as I can. The thing is, my mind doesn't rest long before thinking of the next project that needs to be done before the baby arrives.

Movement: He continues to impress everyone around him with his never-ending movements. He made the doctor laugh out loud at our appointment last week as he contorted my belly with his stretching while she was poking him with the doppler.

Food cravings: Nothing new. My body seems to be craving is water, which has its pros and cons. Pro: I'll be well hydrated for the birth. Con: I pee approximately 2,781 times each day. I have been enjoying a few end-of-pregnancy treats lately, like anything smothered in ketchup (read: fries), and homemade bran muffins with lots-o butter.

What I miss: My active lifestyle. Because of an old injury that has flared up due to pregnancy, I've had to put up my yoga mat and sneakers for these past few weeks. Swimming a lot over our NB vacation was a great treat. I can't wait to take Baby B out in his stroller of long walks and attend Mommy & Baby yoga!

What I am looking forward to: Meeting our little man, of course! And everything that entails, including shelving maternity clothes, bidding adieu to fierce heartburn, hopefully a lot less sweating, and sleeping on my stomach!

Milestones:
I got a baby book this week and printed a few initial photos of the pregnancy. The book is actually a scrapbook with 20 pre-made pages to get me started. Then I can add to it at will (i.e., after the baby starts sleeping through the night and I have regained my energy for all things crafty).

prepping the nest

I think I'm starting to experience my first real signs of nesting. I'm obsessed with the idea of labeled bins and baskets. And before lovely friend A can pipe up and say that I've always been obsessed with bins and baskets, let me defend my neurosis explain.

Baby boy has a lot of stuff. I mean, a full wardrobe to last him until he's about a year-and-a-half old. And where am I expected to put said stuff? Answer: labeled bins/baskets for the nursery. How can you argue with that logic?

It seemed a little out of control that my unborn son already had more clothes than I do. Thanks to many generous gifts and hand-me-downs, he will be one well-dressed little guy. But I quickly realized that there was no need to have clothes for a 12-month-old hanging in the closet for months to come.

So I used these blue bins to separate the six-month-to-12-month duds and the 12-month+ wardrobe.

Then, I happened upon these woven bins at Michaels for 40% off. Plus, they match the nursery decor so well. But I really liked the idea of labels, so I got out my trusty glue gun and some miscellaneous scrapbooking supplies and created these ...

Organization. So satisfying.

showered with love

Our little growing family has been spoiled rotten over the past month with two amazing baby showers — one with Husband's side of the family in Cape Breton and one with my side of the family in New Brunswick. A huge thank you goes out for all of the hard work, generosity and love!

Yes, I was the slowest at the blindfolded diapering game.

Laughing at the pee pee teepees sent from lovely friends A & J.

The delicious snacks prepared by my lovely Mum and Grammie.

Ridiculously cute favours.

As lovely cousin M pointed out, baby's first fashion faux pas! So cute!

pregnancy revelation #421

This little baby is real. Very real. With the already-acquired, very real ability to keep me up at all hours of the night by trying to escape through my belly button.

Husband whispering "Come on baby; you can do it!" at my belly certainly doesn't help.

33 weeks

At 33 weeks — only 48 days to go! — time is really starting to fly by. Just yesterday, Husband told me that he booked the next two scheduled weeks off from his casual job.

Me: Why?! [I asked in confusion, running through our social schedule in my mind]
Husband: Umm, we're having a baby?
Me: [crickets]
Husband: [raises eyebrows, points at belly] Umm ...
Me: OHMYGOD! That's so soon! Eeeeekkkkk!
[followed by an all-too-common hormonal outburst, as my eyes fill with tears]
YAY! I'm so excited!

How far along? 33 weeks.

How big is baby? Growth spurting like crazy, our boy is now more than 17 inches long and about four pounds already, and he'll gain about a half a pound each week for the next seven weeks. Whoa.

Total weight gain:
Still hovering just over 20 lbs. Husband consistently tries to feed me snacks, but it's getting harder and harder to find room in my increasingly packed abdomen for extra food.

Maternity Clothes?
Nothing new. It's been so hot lately that I'm wearing the bare minimum around the house and the lightest dresses and T-shirts, so there's no sense in buying anything new if I can't wear it out.

Stretch marks?
Knock on wood — None yet!

Sleep: Seems to be getting easier. Maybe it's because I'm extra tired? I'm starting to feel first-trimester-esque fatigue again, which is really putting a dent into my library-book reading.

Movement: He still moves all the time, but it's mostly rolling and a lot less kicking. He's getting cramped in there, but still manages to work on his yoga poses.

Food cravings: Like I said before, I'm feeling a lot less hungry, because there's less room for my stomach to expand. But a few things I've been enjoying — fries with lots of ketchup, chocolate milk and guacamole ... not all in one sitting though!

What I miss: Doing anything without sweating.

What I am looking forward to: Making the most of the remaining seven weeks, including finishing up some nursery projects, catching up on some sleep, making and freezing food for the busy post-birth days and lots of reading.

Milestones:
We celebrated our first baby shower for our boy this past weekend with our lovely CB family. It was a great time, we received many generous gifts, and these celebrations are really making his impending arrival seem all the more real!

Oh, and THIS:
Little known, yet common, pregnancy symptom? Kidney stones! I unexpectedly landed in the hospital with one of these little (that is — little in size, huge in pain) annoyances and later found out that it's fairly common to pass a kidney stone while pregnant. Luckily, I passed it about 24 hours after the pain started and I've been symptom free since. Lots of friends and family have come to my aid, sharing stories about how kidney stone pain is worse than labour. If that's true, I'm all set!

re-do a re-do

Remember this makeover?

This reno'd message board sat in my now-defunct Etsy shop, unloved, and once I decided to close the store, it then rested, even more unloved, in the back of my closet. It doesn't really match anything in our house, but I didn't want to discard it. Luckily, now it's found new purpose.

I left the blue background, but picked off the yellow ribbon and star decals. Then I added thicker, chocolate brown ribbon.

But the two strips of ribbon didn't seem like enough, so I added some more.

Followed by a few upholstery tacks leftover from another project.

Ta da! And now it resides in the perfect space on Baby Boy's nursery wall ...

Now all it needs are some baby photos of me and Husband!

More nursery reveal to come soon!

a guide to surviving mat leave

Technically, I'm not on maternity leave yet, but I have been unexpectedly put off work on sick leave (nothing major, simply precautionary). Since I have about seven weeks to go (give or take) until Baby B arrives, I've got to figure out a game plan — yes, friends, I said game plan ... you know it's my favourite term — to surviving nearly two months off work.

Lindsey's Guide to Surviving Leave from Work

1) Get out of bed at a decent time. Don't get me wrong; I'm not anti-sleep-in. That said, on my first day off, I was wide awake at 5:45 a.m. and never did get back to sleep (my neurotic brain couldn't stand the idea of letting me sleep in on my first day off). That's the opposite of what I mean. I just can't spend half my day in bed, and napping makes me cranky. Plus, keeping regular hours will hopefully make for an easier transition to the inevitable baby-induced sleep deprivation.

2) Get clean and dressed. While the obvious inclination, when I have no intentions of leaving the house for the foreseeable future, would to stay in pajamas all day — I just can't do it. Nothing makes me lazier/crankier/slobbier. Even if getting dressed sometimes means clean yoga pants and a T-shirt, it's still something fresh and different for the daylight hours.

3) Make intentions for the day. I can't live without purpose. I have no problem with putting meaningless things on my list, like have breakfast and make lunch, etc., but there have to be goals in progress and a list to cross off.

4) Take advantage. I'm not going to lie — I checked my work e-mail A LOT during that first day. I swear I'm not so vein as to think that the place would fall apart without me. I was just ... well ... bored. I puttered around the house doing small chores, while also getting the doctor-recommended rest, of course. But I still couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't quite right to be home during the day on a Monday. Thankfully, I've reassessed the situation and have realized that there are many things to do to prepare for Baby B's arrival — not to mention that this is the last seven weeks of peace and quiet I will enjoy for the next 18 years or so — and this time off is a gift.

5) Talk to others. And by others, I don't just mean talking to my two cats or my unborn child (though both are certainly effective in their own right). I'm trying to use this break from the office as a great chance to catch up on correspondence — sending messages, e-mails, old-fashioned letters and thoughtful cards. Spending the whole day in silence isn't good for anyone, especially the talkative individuals among us. So I'm doing my best to make conversations happen, even when I'm solo.

pregnancy lesson #481

Clumsy pregnant girls shouldn't wear white pants and carry water bottles unless they want to end up looking like they're instituting a more scandalous twist on the wet T-shirt contest.

31 weeks

We're down to single digits! Only 9 weeks to go until Baby B is ready to make his debut!

How far along?
31 weeks.

How big is baby? About 17 inches long and nearly 3.5 pounds. According to What to Expect When You're Expecting our boy is busy making faces, hiccupping, swallowing, breathing, pedaling with little hands and feet and even sucking his thumb.

Total weight gain: 19 pounds. I can admit that now. For a week following my last doctor's visit, I wasn't admitting that number to myself or to Husband. I've embraced it, and even celebrated it with a chocolate chip cookie.

Maternity Clothes? I stumbled upon an amazing maternity store a couple hours away from our house and was thrilled to find two daytime nursing bras, a comfy, sleeping nursing bra, and a great, adjustable nursing tank top all for 20% off. I'd looked at a few other stores, but was having trouble finding styles that were comfortable. I got these items, two packages of washable organic cotton nursing pads in pretty prints, and a GumDrop newborn pacifier all for under $100!

Stretch marks? Still none! I keep forgetting to moisturize as much as I should though.

Sleep: The biggest annoyance is still getting up in the night to pee on a regular basis. I'm pretty comfortable for the most part though and am doing my best to remember to sleep on my left side to provide the babe with maximum blood flow. To help me stay on that side, I spoon Husband, and he likes it too because Baby B kicks him in the back.

Movement: All-the-time, non-stop, makes-me-think-he's-trying-to-escape rolling, twisting, punching and jumping. I love it.

Food cravings: I keep craving pop. I don't know if it's because it's hot out and I just want a cold drink, or what. But then, when I actually have a drink, I'm totally grossed out by the syrupy-ness of it. Figure it out, hormones.

What I miss: Eating or drinking anything without heartburn. And getting up off the couch without grunting.

What I am looking forward to: Finally ironing out the details of the nursery decor. We have our crib, complete with mattress and sheets, so that's one check mark on the list. We're still waiting for items to come in from Babies R Us, including wall decals and a valance. And I still can't seem to find a slipcover for the hand-me-down pink nursery chair.

Milestones: Since I'm in the home stretch, I've started to see the doctor every two weeks instead of every month. It's exciting to hear Baby B's heartbeat twice each month and get a status update on his growth. He's definitely getting crowded in there!

Oh, and THIS:
Nose bleeds pretty much every day lately. I never had one before I was pregnant, and now they just seem normal to me. I have abnormally small sinuses and all of the pregnancy swelling, excess blood flow and congestion is doing a number on me. Luckily, the doctor assures me that it's nothing out of the ordinary.

29 weeks

Several of my favourite mommy & mommy-to-be bloggers post semi-regular updates of their pregnancies. Since Baby B is taking up so many of my thoughts these days, it seemed to make sense to fill you in on our progress.

How far along? 29 weeks.

How big is baby? Depending on which references you follow, Baby B weighs about 2.5 pounds and about 16 inches long, give or take some ounces or inches. No wonder my belly seems to protruding more and more by the minute.

Total weight gain: Somewhere in the neighbourhood of 16 pounds. Since my BMI was in the "normal" range when I started, I'd like to try to keep the weight gain in the 25 to 35 "ideal" range.

Maternity Clothes? I told myself from the beginning that I wasn't going to spend much money on maternity clothes. If you've ever browsed through Thyme or Motherhood, you know how pricey these specialty items can get. However, I had never, until recently, experienced the omigod-nothing-in-this-entire-closet-fits-me meltdown. So, I have compromised over the past six months and picked up some essentials, including yoga pants, jeans and super long tank tops. This past weekend, I splurged on a couple skirts, a pair of capri-length leggings, a tank top and a tunic-style shirt. Aside from the belly bands that accompany most of the bottoms, I have chosen pieces and styles that should be somewhat wearable after the babe arrives.

Stretch marks? None! (Knock on wood)

Belly button? This has been a subject of amusement for Husband and I for weeks. Is it in? Is it out? I'm ready to officially say that I am now sporting an outie.

Sleep: Some nights are better than others. I toss and turn quite a bit to stay comfortable, which means being an a semi-awake state fairly often throughout the night. I still manage to wake up rested, thankfully. Now that I'm in my third trimester, I've regressed back to my first trimester peeing pattern, which means staggering blindly in the dark toward the toilet at least twice per night.

Movement: I was ready to start kick counts this week, but it really isn't necessary, because this guy is a mover and a shaker. I rarely go five minutes without feeling a roll or a jab. His movements used to be more kick- and punch-like, but now it feels more like stretching and twisting as he has less and less room to move.

(Completely obvious disclaimer: No, this photo isn't of me.)

Food cravings: People ask me this question a lot and for some reason I usually say that I haven't had any. Not true. Remember the chicken burger incident? We may or may not have had a small repeat of this somewhat insane vegetarian behaviour on Sunday night while Husband munched on a club sandwich. I've also been loving breakfast food at all times of the day, which is odd for me. Pancakes, bagels, hash browns and cereal with bananas. And now that it's BBQ season, I can't get enough of veggie hot dogs heaped with the works. Must. Stop. Talking. About. Food.

What I am looking forward to: Obviously I'm looking forward to many things, but right now I'm actually really looking forward to the busy summer ahead. Husband and I will be visiting with lots of friends and family, and enjoying lots of time together before the bambino arrives.

Milestones: Tomorrow I have an appointment with Dr. K, when we'll have our first chat about our birth plan. Ohh my, how is it possible we're ready to talk birth plan already? 11 weeks, and counting!

Oh, and THIS: Heartburn. And if the old wives tale is true that mothers with lots of heartburn have babies with lots of hair, then this boy is going to be born with a fro, I swear.

not me monday

Husband and I did not grab our raincoats and venture out at 9 p.m. to the grocery store tonight.

I wasn't convinced that the vanilla ice cream we have in the freezer just. isn't. good. enough.

I did not circle the store until my shopping basket was filled with fudge brownie frozen yogurt, chopped peanuts, hot fudge and bananas.

I am not sitting on the couch, with a belly full of hot fudge sundae and a huge smile on my face.
